How to Use

World Culture in Context empowers students to discover artists who are connected to communities around the world and to engage directly with artists to learn more about how their identity has been shaped by place. This engagement will inspire students to think about their own communities.

Discover

Using our interactive map, explore artists by location, genre, cultural connections. Pay attention to how certain artists are connected to multiple places.

Search thematically to see connections between multiple artists such as “African Diaspora,” “Women Artists,” “Tradition and Spirituality” and more.

Discover artists through the Find an Artist page.

2

Schedule & Unlock

Once you have identified an artist, schedule your virtual and then receive a code to access the full custom curriculum for your artist. More information about program fee and available subsidies can be found here.

3

Watch!

Students see, hear and learn about the artist by watching a video, a core element of the program.

Each video is 12-15 minutes in length and is required viewing prior to your artist visit.

Review the drop down tabs with Artist and Location Information (additionally available as a downloadable .pdf titled “Artist Info Sheet”) with your students before sharing the video with them.

4

Prepare for Your Visit

Each WCC Artist program includes a custom-designed online curriculum packet. Complete 45 minutes of activities that will help your students understand more about each artist, their tradition and where they are from.

5

Visit Time!

Now that students have engaged with the “Prepare for Your visit” activities and watched the artist video, they are ready to finally meet the artist! We have found that engaging with the material prior to your visit creates a homecoming between the artist and students, who are anxious to ask questions and learn more!

Each visit is 45-60 minutes and is moderated by a folklorist, ethnomusicologist or other expert in the field and includes time for a Q & A between artists and students as well as a demonstration of artist’s practice.

6/7

Share & Reflect

When you schedule your virtual visit, you will receive a code to gain access to your post-visit activities. “Bringing it Back Home” asks students to explore their own cultural identities and ask themselves how their own communities and locations impact who they are.

Included in the classroom materials is an art project unique to each participating artist that can be completed individually or as a class.
